Student Frequently Asked Questions
- Are CAS students required to have a computer?
- Yes. Michigan State University requires all undergraduate students have a computer that can connect to the Internet using a high speed connection. CAS students must also meet this requirement, which is outlined at MSU's computer requirement page.
- Should I buy a Mac or a PC?
- The short answer—it depends. Within the last 5 years, Apple has made great strides in making its systems and files more compatible with the Windows world. Compatibility problems are rare and everyday file formats like .doc, .pdf and .mp3 are interchanged seamlessly. Macs are more expensive then their Dell and Gateway counterparts and usually have fewer options (but many more standard features). PCs are very inexpensive and are almost endlessly configurable, allowing you to build your computer exactly how you want it. CAS uses both Mac and PCs throughout its computer labs and both platforms are fully supported by the college.
- I've decided to buy a Mac—any suggestions?
- Most Macs come very well equipped in their standard form. Your going to want a MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro or iMac with at least 1GB or RAM (2GB if you plan on doing audio, video or graphics) and an 80GB hard drive. Student discounts are available through the CAS Apple Store and the MSU Computer Store.
- I've decided to buy a Windows PC—any suggestions?
- Gateway and Dell are the preferred PC vendors for both CAS and Michigan State University. You'll want to look for a desktop or a laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual Core processor with at least 2GB of RAM. Hard drive size is up to you, but they are available in sizes up to 500GB. The MSU Computer Store has a good selection of both laptops and desktops at discount prices for students.
- Are student discounts available for software?
- Yes, most software vendors offer student software licensing at prices substantially below retail. Visit the pricing section of the MSU Computer Store to locate academic versions of available software. You can also view a complete list of software found in CAS computer labs.
